The Archives and Records Association of New Zealand (ARANZ) has selected Industrious Kiwis: Archives and Industry as the theme for Records and Archives Week 2010. Events celebrating archives relating to industry will be in the first week of May, and continue throughout May.
ARANZ’s Otago/Southland Branch has organised events celebrating the importance of preserving archives relating to industry for their social and historical information and evidence. Records created and used in the past by people carrying out their day to day work provide people today with glimpses into what life was like in the past, reveal how world and community events affected ordinary people, and enable researchers to discern facts, stories and connections which would otherwise remain hidden.
The Presbyterian Archives Research Centre Exhibition titled Stack & Steeple: Support of the Industrial Worker, will be from 7-28 May at the Presbyterian Archives Research Centre, Knox College, Arden Street, displays rarely seen chaplaincy archives which illustrate an aspect of the role of the Church which often goes unnoticed. It includes archives relating to mining, forestry, hydro construction, industry, rising townships and labour unrest! It explores the impact industry had on the wider activities of the Church community, the response of the Presbyterian Church to industrial development within New Zealand, and the attempts at a relationship between faith, industry and labour.
We encourage all those from Dunedin and those passing through to visit the Archives Research Centre to view the Exhibition and have a tour of our new premises.
